A Copywriter Takes New Zealand: How I Fund My World Travels One Post at a Time

by Ruth Buchanan

When I quit a full-time teaching career to pursue writing, I knew that sacrifice would be involved. I mean, I'm no best-seller. I currently write youth dramas for stage, and while I find my work creatively fulfilling, the royalties barely keep me in coffee.

While I didn't mind giving up certain luxuries in order to pursue my craft, I did harbor concern regarding how I would keep up my global adventures. Up to this point, as a single, childless woman possessing fairly good health (and a reasonably sound mind), I'd been in the habit of taking at least one international trip a year. With the career shift, however, I just didn't see how I'd be able to afford my next one.

That's actually why I started working as a copywriter for BlogMutt. By writing only one or two posts per day during the work week, I was eventually able to earn enough money for a trip to New Zealand and back.

Not that I actually wanted to come back! Who would, given such views?

For two weeks this spring, my sister and I rode the rails, spied on sheep, befriended the locals, absorbed Māori culture, hiked volcanic peaks, munched on Tim Tams, guzzled Flat Whites, and followed in the footsteps of Hobbits.

Special highlights of the trip included our day hike on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and a visit to the Hobbiton Movie Set, complete with a drink at the Green Dragon!

Actually, special highlights from the trip include pretty much the whole trip. New Zealand is amazingly beautiful and well worth a visit.

As for me? I'm going to keep on writing.

Next stop: Iceland.

I spent years as a writer and editor, and wrote a nonfiction book before starting BlogMutt with Wade back in 2011. I love words, and I love working with the amazing staff and dedicated writers of BlogMutt who also love words, and know the power that they have. Also, this quote: "I love deadlines," Douglas Adams said. "I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by."
